How is this for a character face
This is Nan Maria. She lives in the mountains of Guatemala and is a dear friend of Julio and Doris who guided our Guatemala Discovery Trip in August.
Not unlike the lives of people like Mary and Elizabeth from our Advent story, Nan Maria’s life has included a lot of hard work, a deep connection with the land, very humble beginnings, strong connection to community, and no small measure of hardship. Her face reveals a depth of character born of this life and a deep faith that has sustained her.
It is hard to put your finger on what it is that Nan Maria radiates. As we left her little dirt-floored home in August, a group member remarked at how little she has but how happy she seems to be. Doris, our guide remarked, “I don’t think happy is the right word. Nan Maria suffers and struggles and is likely often not happy. Maybe peaceful or fulfilled are better words.” I wonder if joy might be deep light we see in the eyes of Nan Maria.
Sometimes it is hard to be happy. But there is something about joy that transcends circumstances, breaks through pain and suffering, and is deeper and stronger.
See you Sunday.
Blessings, Will
