I don’t know about you, but sometimes I can go down a rabbit hole in my brain and heart trying to understand (accept) that there are things I know to be true, things I believe, yet can’t see. Do you know what I mean?
Like I believe in the energy created by a windmill, but I can’t see it. I believe that a Boeing 747 is over 180,000kg, but I can’t see that weight when I watch it float through the sky. I believe fish need oxygen to “breathe” but I can’t see it. I believe there is a world existing around, beyond, with and within the world we often focus on, but I can’t see it.
So, how do I (we) know these things to be true? Perhaps it’s because we witness the effects. For example, we know it to be true that a fish gets oxygen because it has energy to move through the water. In the same way, we know it to be true that there is a world around, beyond, with and within the one we tend to focus on because we witness is effects: anger that transforms into reconciliation; a grudge that moves toward forgiveness; hungry stomachs and hearts fed by food and caring, our locked and protected hearts softening into the power of vulnerability.
This week’s scripture passages help us explore the relationship between – or the contrast of – the contract kind of world us humans have developed with the agape, abundant kind of world God invites us into.
I believe this world to be true. And sometimes I can even see it! How about you?
